Iceland Volcanic Ash: Grimsvotn Eruption to Affect European Flights

Volcanic ash from the Iceland volcano eruption is making its way into European airspace, starting with Scotland. A thick cloud of volcanic ash from Grimsvotn is expected to "cover much of Scotland by May 24.

While the ash cloud is not expected to reach mainland Europe, disruption of flights to and from UK airports will have a knock-on effect throughout Europe, as well as screwing up travel patterns to and from other continents. Keflavik Airport in Reykjavik (KEF) is still closed, and is set to reopen at 7pm GMT. Double-check the link above before leaving for the airport, though.

Echoes of Eyjafjallajökull

While the Grimsvotn volcano eruption carries echos of the Eyjafjallajökull eruption, it looks like the disruption will not be as great, and will hopefully not draw as much ire from Scotland.
