Stop Icelandic Whaling

Iceland is a stunning, pristine land that attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year, many of them to go whale watching in the clear arctic waters. Greenpeace has launched a "Whale tourism pledge" -- a promise to visit Iceland if the government stops whaling.

With every tourist worth an average of US$ 1,169 to the Icelandic economy, the tens of thousands of pledges to date represent more than 100 million USD in potential tourist revenue for Iceland -- against a commercial whaling programme which was worth less than 4 million USD per annum in its prime in the 1980s, and is today effectively worthless.

Help convince Iceland that whales are worth more alive than dead: take the pledge and send the message below.

(If you've already taken the pledge, click here to just send a message to Tourism officials in Iceland.)
Iceland Whales Pledge

“I would seriously consider taking a vacation in Iceland rather than somewhere else if the Government of Iceland stopped whaling. I would be willing to receive an email about the options available for Icelandic tourism, an email that would be sent to me if the Government of Iceland ends its whaling program.”

If you agree with the statement above, send the message below to the Icelandic Ministry of Tourism. (If you’ve previously taken the pledge, click here to just send the letter.)

Dear Sir,

I was pleased to hear of Iceland's decision not to set quotas on its commercial whale hunt.

I have pledged to seriously consider a visit to Iceland, as have more than a hundred thousand others, if whaling were to end.

The value of those pledges is now worth far, far more than whaling can ever bring Iceland -- from people who greatly value the whale watching and nature tourism which Iceland has to offer.

I understand that the commercial value of the whale hunt was a mere US$4 million per annum at its peak. Its current commercial value appears to be negative.

Greenpeace has offered to provide to the Iceland government a mailing list of people like me who would like to visit Iceland.

I ask you to impress upon the Fisheries Minister and the Prime Minister that an announcement that Iceland will end all whale hunting would be the reason I need to make good on my pledge to consider a trip to Iceland.

By putting away harpoons that have no commercial value, your country's tourism trade stands to gain greatly.

I hope you can effectively speak for all of us who would like to visit Iceland, but find Iceland's whaling policy difficult to reconcile with its otherwise very strong environmental and conservationist reputation.

Stop Icelandic Whaling

www.nowpublic.com/stop_icelandic_whaling

Iceland has just announced that they will give a license to one man to commercially hunt whales. The quota is 30 minke whales and 9 fin whales - which are an endangered species.
39 whales might not sound like much, but considering the threats that these whales face from climate change, pollution and overfishing, this is the last thing they need.

The decision does not make economic sense either. Greenpeace campaigner Frode Pleym said, "Iceland has no market for whale meat, but they do have a huge and far more valuable market for whale watching."

Tell Iceland that it makes much more sense to support whale watching, not whaling.
