The Uttarakhand irrigation department has been illegally dumping unidentified corpses and carcasses of homestead animals on the banks of the Ganga near just a few km downstream from Rishikesh.
The department has put an iron net at Bir Bhadra barrage, three km from Rishikesh, to "catch" the bodies floating on the Ganga so that "wastefree" water can flow into the 4x36 MW Chilla powerhouse - 14 km from there.
It has hired two boatmen to fish out bodies stuck in the net.
The duo ties a nylon rope on a leg of a corpse and hooks the other end to their motorboat.
