Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Incessant heavy rains on Friday triggered flooding in Jakarta, including areas surrounding the presidential palace which is located in Medan Merdeka Utara, with floodwaters reaching a height of around 40 centimeters.
The flooding which caused severe congestions in Sudirman and Thamrin avenues, disturbed the journey of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who was on the way back to the palace from a visit to Karawang, West Java.
He was stuck for more than 30 minutes in the avenues, especially in Thamrin, forcing him to leave his Mercedes and moved to a higher security I jeep to dare the rains and flooding toward the palace.
A banyan tree located near the State Palace fell due to the heavy rains.
Jakarta`s areas inundated by the floodwaters included Merdeka Selatan, Sabang, Kelapa Gading, Cempaka Putih, Kota, Duren Sawit, Pondok Bambung, Pekojan and Gatot Subroto.
According to weather forecast of the US National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (NOAA)`s National Weather Service recently, expected La Nina impacts during January-March included a continuation of above-average precipitation over Indonesia.
East Java, Gorontalo and West Sumatra Provinces were also currently inundated. (*) END
