A 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the Andaman Islands. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a tsunami watch for India, Bangladesh, Myanmar (Burma), Indonesia, and Thailand, which they have now canceled.
According to the bulletin linked below, sea level readings show that a tsunami was generated.
Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre bulletin 002; Aug 10, 2009
The USGS said the quake, initially reported as a magnitude 7.7, was 20.6 miles (33 km) deep and was centered 160 miles (260 km) north of Port Blair in the Andaman Islands.
The Andaman Islands were badly hit by the 2004 Asian tsunami which was triggered by an earthquake off the Indonesian island of Sumatra and sent giant waves crashing into countries around the Indian Ocean.
This quake struck just after the Japan earthquake, which generated two-foot waves along Japan's coast.

Thanks for posting this timely piece about tsunami alert due to a series of earthquakes, Jordan. I was just commenting about tsunami in Paschen's post on the earthquake in Japan.

There have been a good number of earthquakes in the last couple of days, a friend of mine here in Baja swears she´s been feeling earth movements since Saturday!

I've heard that we've known about earthquakes link to tsunami's since a 9.0 earthquake in 1960. Anybody have details? Anyway, with this knowledge, do we think we can give enough warning to the coastal areas threatened this time and in future quakes to avoid a replay of the 225,000 people killed in Indonesia's 2004 tsumani? I don't want to mislead anyone so all info here should be checked and verified for validity. Any true info pertaining to this concern is welcome.
