NP Rank:
Indian Snake Charmers rally for their rights
Over 1000 snake charmers in Calcutta, India have staged a protest.
Protesters donned their flutes and filled the streets of Calcutta in protest of a 1991 law banning their trade.
Shows featuring cobras and other snakes have been banned in India since 1991.
Snake charmers say the ban threatens the survival of their way of life. Animal rights groups say it should be kept to curb the abuse of snakes.
"We are being consistently harassed by the police for keeping snakes, which are snatched away without paying us compensation," Mr Das said.

The Cobras I saw being charmed had their fangs pulled out. I hope these confiscated ones aren`t just released back in to the wild.

this photo was clicked on a industrial visit to agra.though snake charming is banned in india nobody especially in the urban areas entertain such activities and probably would be phased out or maybe die their own natural death. As for these snake-charmers receiving no compensation, we in india have learnt not to expect something from the police, the judiciary or the entire system, perhaps, u cud write something about that...........the articles was nice.

thoygh the snake charmers aren't exctly saints, the snakes fangs are removed, they r tamed etc. in short many attrocities are committed on them, as for their survival- man could do anything for his survival- even kill his own kin- but who on earth gives them the right to trample innocent animals? do they care? no. and the authoroties are justified to stop it though the system on it's part is wrong.. it's a conflict---see why india is still a third world country? it contradicts itself .

Snake Charmers are a rare entity in the urban areas of India no, unlike days of old when they used to make their appearances in plenty especially during a festival called 'Naag Panchami' .
Public awareness of about 'feeding milk to the snake' particularly the Cobra has increased and noone indulges nor encourages such acts anymore.
Neverthe less in rural areas, more awareness needs to be created. This photograph was clicked during a recent visit to Jaipur's famous Amber fort and the tourists, both local as well as the foriegn ones seemed overawed by this site of the poor cobra swaying to the charmers tune.
