Italian officials have issued a series of heat alerts on Wednesday ahead of a heat wave expected to hit Italy this week. The cities on the highest level 3 alert -- Rome, Perugia, Latina, Milan, Bologna and Brescia. The cities of Bolzano, Venice, Florence, Civitavecchia and Rieti are on level 2 alert. Temperatures are expected to reach into mid-forties, prompting fire advisories.
The heat wave is expected to last through the week and civil protection officials believe special measures need to be taken for those most at risk: the elderly, newborns and people with respiratory or cardiovascular problems.
The heatwave has sparked dozens of fires across the country, the forest service said.
