It's a Bird...no it's a Plane...no it's a Giant Cigarette!
Keep Britain Tidy has dumped an enormous 30ft high giant cigarette on Trafalgar Square in London today. This is part of their major anti-litter campaign targeting the people who drop their butts on the country’s streets. The massive size of the cigarette is meant to reflect the number of cigarette butts littered on the streets throughout the UK. This problem has stemmed from people showing their irritation on the smoking ban that was implemented last July.
The world’s biggest cigarette butt has been “dumped” in Trafalgar Square to highlight what’s become the country’s biggest litter problem. With cigarette related litter on 78% of the country’s streets, Keep Britain Tidy is launching its most aggressive advertising campaign against people who drop their butts on our streets.
The giant butt is 30ft high, 1.5metres wide and symbolises the problem that is plaguing the nation.
A sea of cigarette ends
According to Keep Britain Tidy, since the ban on smoking in public places came in last July, we are literally swimming in a sea of cig butts.
And as the number of cig ends continues to soar, Keep Britain Tidy’s chief executive, Phil Barton has gone on the offensive:
“Since the smoking ban was brought in nine months ago, the number of discarded butts on our streets has soared. We applaud the cigarette ban as it has made our pubs and restaurants more pleasant environments to be in. But unfortunately we are now seeing an epidemic of smoking related litter on our streets.

A lot of people seem to think that cigarettes don't count as litter for some reason. They may be small, but they're an eyesore in large numbers.

There is a smoking ban on OCTranspo property, so most people (especially employees) walk across the street and smoke on this corner. There is no butt collection receptacle there - yet.

Yeah these butts are a problem but I smoke and the amount I care about how littered this world is || that small. I am sure the same goes for most people who smoke cigs and never think twice before throwing/flicking these butts on the ground and when the time comes to the point where there is so much litter than the earth will cleanse itself of the parasites on it (humans) and THAN we will know we shouldnt have done that. And also this littering really isnt the big problem here we need more renewable energy and I think if we can convert most power to green/renewable energy than we should start on smaller things (cigarette butts) at which time we wont be worrying about air pollution as much which is just disgusting in alot of cities that form alot of smog over them. An earth converted to wind turbines, solar panels and water turbines would make the earth much happier than an earth with no cigarette butts.
