January 2010 in Vancouver: Warmest on Record, New Weather Website
January 2010 in Vancouver BC has been the warmest on record and with the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics fast approaching the Canadian Government has decided to spend $13.4 million on a system to track what is known as 'one of the world's most complex weather systems'.
People can keep track of the weather in and around Vancouver with the new Weatheroffice website.
David Jones from Environment Canada said that even though they can track everything, the weather still has a mind of its own.
"We're subject to extreme events, we're subject to new types of weather systems we have not seen before, so we're going to try to do the best job we can to forecast the weather but it is always a challenge in this type of environment."

The weather has been a cause for concern over the past weeks as Games organizers realized that the lack of winter weather could affect the events. Cypress had to get snow and hay trucked and helicoptered in to make sure there was enough snow.
Vancouver already has the distinction of being the warmest city to host the Winter Olymipcs and with the amout of rain that fell in January, the snow just washed away. Even in 108 Mile House when the Olympic Torch Relay passed through, organizers had to abandon the idea of using a horse-drawn sleigh and had to use a wagon instead as barely any snow remains on the ground.
Records in Vancouver go back to 1937 and this is set to be the warmest January ever.
El Nino is apparently to blame for the warming and although this only occurs once every two to seven years, it is creating problems with Vancouver's weather this year.
Even Quatchi has abandoned his furry coat and has gone to Kits beach for some sea and sand.

What's with the 11c in Vancouver in January. Damn it never got that warm when I visited there this time of year. Definitely t-shirt weather in Alberta.

Great pictures, good history.
Maybe the winter olympics should move to Oklahoma?
