An Earthquake Hit Japan On August 18, 2011. The 6.8 Quake Triggered a Tsunami Warning for the Fukushima Region

A 6.8 earthquake occurred near Japan on Friday, August 19, 2011.

Nearly three million people may have felt the quake, which hit northeastern Japan on Friday afternoon.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the August 19 Japan quake was centered around 99 km (61 miles) SE of Sendai, Honshu at a depth of about 39.1 km (24.3 miles). They measured the quake at 6.5 while other reports recorded a magnitude of 6.8.

A tsunami warning was issued in the wake of the Honshu quake. The tsunami warning was later lifted, according to Reuters.
