NP Rank:
The Japanese Whale hunt will remain.
By, Uwe Paschen.
The Whale hunt and why it is still being practiced by Japan is more of a generation problem as well as a political one then a necessity or the will of the people at large here.
The Mainichi Daily News Does insist that Japan has the Right to hunt Whales and that this has been part of Japans inherent culture.
Japan does hunt Whales annually for research and redistributes the meat after this "research" is concluded; at least this is the official version here in Japan and internationally. Among the Whales hunted, it does focus mainly on minke whales that are not endangered and fin whales that are endangered.
Some Japanese do adamantly defend this right as part of their culture. These are however the early and late Baby boomer generations holding on to a practice that is long over due and for wish there is no real need any longer either. Yet, Whaling is sponsored and maintained by the Government with Taxpayers money, or it could not even survive any longer as an industry.
The Younger generation does not eat Whale meat nor does it visit the few restaurants that still serve it or that are specialized in this type of food. However, the older generation does eat Whale meat, even if only seldom nowadays, they do defend their right to consume it.
Ironically if one goes back in History a little, It was Japan that was strongly opposed to Modern Whaling practices that the Norwegian introduced in the in the Meiji era, Wish they regarded as cruel and indiscriminate killing of Whales, Those Whales back then where still regarded as deities of the sea and which helped the corral fish.
However, things start changing following the devastation of World War II, as food was scares and famines a constant threat to the Country. Whales being a cheep source of protein became the larger part of the post-war diet. Why the people defending this practice today do so in part because of a deep trauma lying in the past of their Youth or Infancy, called Hunger.
Now, why is it still going on even though it is not even self-sustainable any longer? The reasons are actually simple and more of sociological and demographical nature then a logical one. Japan is an aging Society just as most Industrial Societies are nowadays; the older part of the population outnumbers the Younger part by an increasing factor annually.
This rift is in part due to a falling birth rates, a lack or no net immigration as well as being blessed with the highest life expectancies in the world, at 81.25 years of age as of 2006 and a high population density. Making Japan the world's tenth most populated country in the World today.
This has an immense impact on Politics and Policies alike, since the Baby boomers outnumber the youth, the Youth does not even bother to vote any longer since their voice will just be berried by the Baby Boomers hold on Society. Why Whaling may still be practiced for some time, since it has little to do with common sense any longer and more with demographics.

Nice article, actually i had read similar on the other website.
I live in China,as everyone knows that Chinese eat nearly everything, last month a journalist revealed that lots of cats were delivered to restaurants in southern China.Precious or protected animals cann't have good ends, don't mention dog, monkey, ect. At the same time the way to kill them is very cruel. My meaning doesn't stand for what japanese does ,but wish more attention to China.

Interesting, However I doubt that this has much to do with Cats and Dogs.

I hate whale hunting, and although I can see the history behind it, I think it's time to re-visit the practice of this and think about what benefit this is really having, if any, on the environment..

Good story.
I also agree it is time to end all whale hunting.

It's been a busy few days for the Defending Whales Team in Tokyo, Japan:
"Stake outs, testimony from informers, hidden cameras and tailing trucks full of stolen goods - it reads like a Hollywood movie, but it was an every day experience for Greenpeace activists in Japan, who have spent four months cracking open a major conspiracy of corruption at the heart of Japan's government-backed, sham scientific whaling operation."

Extreme mercury levels revealed in whalemeat (not verified)at 09:03 on May 6th, 2009
Extreme mercury levels revealed in whalemeat
* 10:32 06 June 2002 by Andy Coghlan
www.newscientist.com/article/dn2362-extreme-mercury-level...
Tests on whalemeat on sale in Japan have revealed astonishing levels of mercury. While it has long been known that the animals accumulate heavy metals such as mercury in their tissues, the levels discovered have surprised even the experts.
Two of the 26 liver samples examined contained over 1970 micrograms of mercury per gram of liver. That is nearly 5000 times the Japanese government's limit for mercury contamination, 0.4 micrograms per gram.
At these concentrations, a 60-kilogram adult eating just 0.15 grams of liver would exceed the weekly mercury intake considered safe by the World Health Organization, say Tetsuya Endo, Koichi Haraguchi and Masakatsu Sakata at the University of Hokkaido, who carried out the research. "Acute intoxication could result from a single ingestion," they warn in a draft paper accepted for publication in The Science of the Total Environment.
The researchers call on the government to impose tighter regulations on the consumption of whale organs. In particular, they warn that pregnant women risk poisoning their unborn children. In the 1950s and early 1960s, hundreds of children around Japan's Minamata Bay were born with horrific birth defects after their mothers ate seafood contaminated with mercury compounds, which had been poured raw into the bay since the 1930s. Thousands more suffered brain damage.
Single mouthful
Even veteran researchers from the Minamata saga were shocked by the new figures. "Hirokatsu Akagi, a director of the National Institute for Minamata Disease, was very surprised," says Endo. "He'd never seen levels above 20 micrograms per gram."
On average, concentrations of mercury in whale and dolphin livers were 370 micrograms per gram, 900 times the government limit. Average levels in kidneys and lungs were also high, about 100 times the limit. None of the samples was below the limit.
In work not yet published, Endo's team has shown that rats suffered acute kidney poisoning after a single mouthful of the most highly contaminated liver. While levels were lower in muscle, Endo told New Scientist that on average it still contained 2.5 to 25 times the limit.
The samples came from small-toothed whales and dolphins, catches of which are not restricted by the International Whaling Commission, the international body that regulates whaling. Mercury becomes concentrated in their internal organs when they eat contaminated fish and squid.
Japan continues to campaign vigorously to be allowed to resume full-scale whaling of larger species. But an IWC meeting in May 2002 ended in deadlock.

Activists from Greenpeace Japan meet the whaling factory ship Nisshin Maru with a banner saying "FAILED" as it arrives in Tokyo, Japan to unload whale meat for sale. The ship failed to meet its quota of 935 whales by nearly half, in part because the Greenpeace ship Esperanza stopped the entire whaling operation for 15 days as it chased the Nisshin Maru across the Southern Ocean, over a distance of 4300 miles.

Sea Shepherd in Taiji, November 2003
Back in October 2003, Captain Paul Watson sent a team to Taiji, Japan to document the slaughter of the dolphins. The video and photos of that campaign made international headlines and the exposed atrocities of the Japanese dolphin killers to the world.
In November 2003, Sea Shepherd crewmembers Allison Lance of the United States and Alex Cornelissen of the Netherlands cut the nets and freed 15 dolphins, saving them from slaughter. They were both jailed for three weeks before being released and they were both quite happy to trade three weeks of their freedom for the lives of the dolphins.
In response to the freeing of the dolphins and the exposure of the slaughter, the Taiji fishermen erected huge tarp barricades to keep the killing from being documented and it became a crime to wear a Sea Shepherd shirt or hat or to be a member of Sea Shepherd in Taiji.
Sea Shepherd did return in October 2007 along with World champion free surfer Dave Rastovich and celebrities Hayden Panettiere (Heroes) and Isabel Lucas (Transformers Revenge of the Fallen). Sea Shepherd crewmember Simeon Houtman accompanied the surfers and once again the slaughter was given worldwide coverage.
The Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS) had to find a way to film on the other side of the barricades where the slaughter was taking place.
OPS invested some big bucks and covertly planted cameras on the beaches, in the air, underwater and in the hills to capture every horrific detail of one of the cruelest and most monstrous massacres of wildlife on the planet.
The result is "The Cove," one of the most extraordinary wildlife crime films ever produced. This film documents and exposes the Taiji dolphin slaughter dramatically, effectively, covertly, and magnificently.
Sea Shepherd Captain Paul Watson was interviewed for this film in June 2008 in Santiago, Chile during the meeting of the International Whaling Commission and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is very proud to be associated with this powerful indictment of the Japanese dolphin slaughter.
The film has now been acquired by Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions for distribution in the United States. The U.K.-based the Works Intl., in conjunction with James Atherton's Quickfire Films Fund, has acquired all other territories. In addition, Participant Media has signed on to perform outreach for "The Cove," working with nonprofits and community groups.
The film is an Oceanic Preservation Society presentation of a Jim Clark production, in association with Diamond Docs and SkyFish Films. The film is produced by Paula DuPre Pesmen and Fisher Stevens and executive produced by Jim Clark.

Japanes whaling ship Nisshin Maru arrives back in Japan Workers unload boxes from the Nisshin Maru to a courier van. The ship is docked in Shimonoseki, Japan, having just returned from its last so-called "scientific" whaling expedition to the Southern Ocean whale sanctuary. One year ago Greenpeace activists Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki first exposed the embezzlement of whale meat from the fleet by intercepting a box similar to these, and handing it in to the Japanese Public Prosecutor as evidence. Sato and Suzuki are still on trial and facing up to ten years in prison, yet nothing has been done to address the scandal and the real criminals behind the embezzlement. Greenpeace
is calling for all charges against Sato and Suzuki to be dropped, and

whaleboatblog Dear Friends,
Photo: Beautifully restored Icelandic fishing boats, now used for whale watching. The people of Iceland have chosen a new Prime Minister, Johanna Sigurdardottir. A well known opponent Iceland's whaling whaling, before the election, Ms Sigurdardottir's interim government made clear its opposition to Iceland’s whaling legacy.
In the coming month, while the Prime Minister and her colleagues are busy creating a new government and working to regenerate the nation’s economy, Iceland has a real chance to end decades of damaging policy, by becoming a world leader in whale conservation.
Click here to write to Iceland's Prime Minister now.
Please ask Ms Sigurdardottir to make the best of this important opportunity: by cancelling Iceland's five year commercial whaling quota, and ensuring that Iceland's representative at this year’s International Whaling Commission meeting votes for whale conservation, firmly establishing Iceland as an environmental model for other nations to follow.

The Oceanic Viking reports that at least five whales have been killed in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. I am sad, angry and frustrated.
We chased the factory ship the Nisshin Maru over a distance of 4,300 nautical miles. During that time no whales were killed. When we had to leave the Australian surveillance vessel Oceanic Viking had arrived. If the whaling fleet have "only" killed five whales so far, it means that the whaling fleet didn't resume whaling immediately, but I guess they got desperate to try and fill their quota. It is very difficult to find anything positive to say today.
Media coverage and public discussion on the whaling issue has reached unprecedented levels in Japan, and Prime Minister Fukuda has been forced to discuss the whaling issue in Parliament.
Japanese taxpayers must be wondering why they are funding this scandalous fake research operation which produces no real science, whale meat that very few wants to eat, and brings their country into international disrepute.
The Japanese government wants to "normalise" the International Whaling Commission, and overthrow the moratorium on commercial whaling. Bloody pictures of whales being killed in the Southern Ocean do not serve this purpose.

Navio de ONG se choca com baleeiro japonês no mar da Antártida
Do UOL Notícias*

End Whale & Dolphin Slaughter in the Faroe Islands!
Target:Prime Minister Jannes Eidesgaard
Sponsored by: John Koehler
www.thepetitionsite.com/1/end-whale-dolphin-s
Whales are sensitive, social animals with highly developed nervous systems. They have a profound capacity to suffer distress, terror and pain. Each year, the Faroese kill pilot whales and other small cetaceans.
Islanders in motorboats first drive the whales into a bay. The chase may be lengthy. The exhausted, terrified and confused whales are eventually driven into the shallows. Here the bloodbath begins. The islanders repeatedly hammer 2.2 kg metal gaffs into the living flesh of each whale until the hooks hold. A 15 cm knife is then used to slash through the blubber and flesh to the spinal column. Next the main blood vessels are severed. The blood-stained bay is soon filled with horribly mutilated and dying whales.
The Faroese celebrate the butchery of their victims in an carnival atmosphere of entertainment. Indoctrinated from an early age, children are often given a day off school to watch the fun. They run down to the bay and clamber over the carcasses of slaughtered whales.
Every year around 2,000 whales are driven ashore and cruelly slaughtered in the Faroe Islands, mid-way between the Shetland Islands and Iceland. For centuries the Faroe Islanders have hunted pilot whales, driving entire schools into killing bays, where they are speared or gaffed from boats, dragged ashore and butchered with knives. Although the Islands are a protectorate of Denmark, they have their own Government and regulations governing the pilot whale hunt or "grind" as it is known.
Aside from the fact that the number of North Atlantic long-finned pilot whales is unknown and they are listed as 'strictly protected' by the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, this is an act of barbarism and pointlessness. By slaughtering 100 whales at a time, the Faroese are wiping out entire pods and family groups. They are removing building blocks from the gene pool of the species and damaging the web of life in the North Atlantic and the North Sea.
The drive hunt is a practice abandoned elsewhere many decades ago, and now outlawed by other European states. The inhabitants of the Faroe Islands have no subsistence need for whale meat, and much of the flesh is left to rot and be dumped; it cannot be exported, as it is polluted with heavy metals and other toxins and therefore cannot meet EU heath standards for human food.
According to Faroese legislation it is also permitted to hunt certain species of small cetaceans other than pilot whales. These include: Bottlenose dolphin; Atlantic white-beaked dolphin; Atlantic white-sided dolphin; and Harbour porpoise (There are also specific regulations for the hunting of harbour porpoise. Harbour porpoises are killed with shotguns).

Stop Icelandic Whaling
www.nowpublic.com/stop_icelandic_whaling
Iceland has just announced that they will give a license to one man to commercially hunt whales. The quota is 30 minke whales and 9 fin whales - which are an endangered species.
39 whales might not sound like much, but considering the threats that these whales face from climate change, pollution and overfishing, this is the last thing they need.
The decision does not make economic sense either. Greenpeace campaigner Frode Pleym said, "Iceland has no market for whale meat, but they do have a huge and far more valuable market for whale watching."
Tell Iceland that it makes much more sense to support whale watching, not whaling.
