Joy over India tiger cubs births

For our two days in Ranthambore I booked 4 safaris to maximise the chance of seeing a tiger. Day one we saw a Tiger in the evening, on day two we saw five tigers in the evening. The guide told us we were as lucky as anyone could ever be. I was lucky enough to meet this incredible cub while on Safari in South Africa - Not the first place i was expecting to come across a breeding programme. I hope the more people come into contact with them the more likely they will be to promote awareness of the plight of the Tigers "in the Wild"

This one year female Sumatran cub weighed in at approximately 70kg. Seen here at Dreamworld's Tiger Island on the Gold Coast, Australia.

According to Dreamworld's website, her parents have the purest blood lines in the Australasian region, making her an extremely significant contribution to the conservation of Sumatran Tigers. When she is 3-4 years of age, they plan to transfer her to another zoo for the global breeding program.

It is quite weird that the news has come out now... the tiger cub in the photograph is over 18 months old and is being counted as one of the new 14 found. The claim is not as rosy as it is being made out to be. The numbers are yet to be confirmed.

Those three siblings all wanted the same piece of meat, although a few others (even juicier) were available. Their mom watches and decides not to interfere.

The cubs I photographed were at Cango Cheetah Reserve in Oudtshoorn, South Africa. While their mission statement, "To promote and fund the conservation of cheetah and other endangered species through captive breeding, research and public awareness.”, refers mainly to cheetahs, they also have a Bengal tiger breeding program. Visitors to the wildlife ranch can interact with the tiger cubs for a fee, which helps support the conservation program.

Born at West Midlands Safari Park in United Kingdom on 15th October to their mother Tikva and fathered by Tahaas "Mischief and Mayhem" are now on display to the public. Their older brother Buster who was abandoned by his mum a few months previous is also on display. The park is home to 6 fully grown white bengal tigers plus several large ginger bengal tigers.

The cubs were so friendly, you could basically do anything to them. I also got some good shots of my wife hugging them! A day to remember!!

I visited the Lion and Rhino Park in South Africa, in the Cradle of Mankind. They take in animal orphans and have at least 5 Bengal tigers, some of them are little cubs and other are fully grown. They also have cheetah, hippos and other wild animals. It's worth visiting.

According to the Philly Zoo, the mom, Kira, was born at the Leipzig Zoo in Germany on May 18, 1997. She was imported to the Philadelphia Zoo on
May 14, 1998. Kira was introduced to Dmitri (not shown) on January 16, 2007 and gave birth to her fourth litter
of cubs on May 24, 2007. Koosaka (koo-SAH-kah), one of the 3 born is seen here nose to nose with mom. Koosaka means "biter" in Russian.

This photo was taken by my daughter's teacher Laureen Murry at the Tekchhou Zoo in Kampot province, Cambodia, in March 2008. While not a particularly nice zoo, we were delighted to see not one but three tiger cubs born there. It's a testament to the strength and endurance of these magnificent animals.
