The production of one ton of crude steel would need energy equivalent to the energy a car needs to cover a distance of 5,100 kilometers, or to the energy contained in three barrels of crude oil.

"It has been estimated that 5 to 10 percent of the global greenhouse gas emissions is produced by the iron and steel industry. Each ton of crude steel produces 1.7 tons of C02," Agus Sari said.

Gas emissions from the iron and steel industry, including from PT Krakatau Steel, are produced from gas during the production process, fuel oil consumption in the blast furnace, or during casting, consumption of fossil products or charcoal as reduction agent, and the production of coke and charcoal.

Tara F Khaira said she will prepare a concept on emission reduction at Krakatau Steel, for later submission to the United Nations to obtain a certificate to secure a project under the CDM mechanism.
