Lake Erie Frozen For First Time In 14 Years: 3 Rescued From Lake
Lake Erie is frozen over for the first time in 14 years. The lake's frozen surface is several inches thick off the southern shore, but only paper thin in other places. Lake Erie's frozen conditions have already lead to a few rescues in the past few days. The conditions seem to be variable on different parts of the lake due to cracks in the ice caused by severe winds.
Two men were rescued from Lake Erie today after their ATVs broke through the ice of the frozen over lake. David Kish, 52, called for help from his cell phone and alerted rescuers to his location about a mile and half from Sturgeon Point Marina. A helicopter was sent in following a call from the Erie County Sheriff's Department.
David Moreno, 60, soon called to report that his ATV had also broken through the ice of Lake Erie and that he was stranded. EMS workers evaluated the two men upon rescue and they were soon released.
Two men were rescued from Lake Erie this afternoon after their ATVs broke through the ice, Evans Police Chief Ernie Masullo said.
Shortly after noon, police got a cell phone call from David Kish, a Kenmore man whose ATV broke through the ice about a mile and a half off Sturgeon Point Marina. He provided coordinates to rescuers.
The rescue of these two men was carried out by the Lake Erie Beach Volunteer Fire Company and the North Evans Fire District. While the ATV vehicles had sunk too far beneath the ice, the two men were found to be okay.
There was another rescue made at Lake Erie on Sunday. John Cmic went missing in what has been described as whiteout conditions on the lake. He set out for an ice fishing trip and did not return home. An all night search was carried out involving a Grifton search helicopter co-coordinated with ground crews.
John Crnic, 49, set out from the inner bay at Long Point near Port Rowan Sunday and apparently became lost during a white-out on the lake.
Cmic was found around 9:40am on Sunday after going missing on Saturday. He was found by an ATV driver around the Pottahawk Point area.
