L'Aquila Earthquake Rescue Effort Underway
Working under floodlights and by flashlight, rescue crews in central Italy are racing against time to free anyone still trapped alive beneath the rubble after an earthquake devastated the area around L'Aquila.
Meanwhile, hospitals, also damaged in the quake, struggle to provide medical care to those in need, even as aftershocks persist in the region. Families are displaced, and are moving to shelters, travelling out of the region, or just trying to figure out what to do next.

Sadly, the death toll will likely increase as more bodies are discovered overnight.
At least 150 people are dead, dozens missing, 1,500 injured and some 50,000 homeless after the pre-dawn quake struck L'Aquila and its region.
Emergency crews have reportedly pulled 60 people alive from the rubble.
The earthquake hit 26 towns and cities around L’Aquila, which lies in a valley surrounded by the Apennine mountains. One small town, Onna, was almost completely flattened. Castelnuovo, a hamlet of about 300 people 15 miles southeast of L’Aquila, was also hard hit.
