Last minute shopping without wheels
For the last year I have been trying to live without my car. I generally can survive without using it 6 days a week. Between riding my bike, taking the bus and very occasionally running to work I find it's actually easier to be without a car in the city. I let myself take a taxi every once in a while. Aside from saving about $800 per month in parking, gas, depreciation and insurance I have fewer hassles and and am becoming fatter much more gradually.
With the snow we got this week I had to blend my car free living with my penchant for last minute Christmas shopping. There was a lot at stake. Without the Incredible Hulk toy beneath the tree there'd be a lot of wasted good behaviour on behalf of my 5 year old. So I threw some running at the problem. It was a bit treacherous at times but in the end I recommend sneaker shopping. It'll keep your purchases to a minimum and minimize the impact of the booze and food that is sure to follow.

I think it's far less stressful. My wife and I live in downtown Vancouver and do not have a car. Most of the time its a blessing not having to worry about it. I know I'd be tempted to use one if I had it when I could and should walk. We are members of the Cooperative Auto Network though, so we can book a car to use when we really need one. It certainly makes us think about our travel choices more.

I did exactly the same thing yesterday - it was way too dangerous to dive anyway. I must say, I am sore today but I do feel better about indulging in those five cookies I ate earlier!
