Lewis Gordon Pugh To Swim Mt Everest Waters For Climate Change
British endurance swimmer and environmental activist Lewis Gordon Pugh will be swimming under the summit of Mt Everest to raise awareness for the importance of protecting the glaciers of the Himalayas. These glaciers are currently under major threat due to global warming. Scientists believe that the water supply that supports 1.3 billion individuals could completely disappear within the next 25 years.
Lewis Gordon Pugh's Mt Everest swim is his attempt to urge politicians to collectively strategize against climate change and the vast problems that global warming will cause if nothing is done.
The expedition to swim 1km in a lake on the slopes of Everest is scheduled for April 2010 and I will be training incredibly hard over the winter for what will undoubtedly be the hardest swim of my life. There wont be polar bears, but at 5,300 metres, I will meet the double challenge of swimming at extreme altitude and in freezing water.
In 2007, Pugh raised awareness for the melting of the Arctic sea ice with his swim across a patch of sea at the North Pole. This was his first swim and lead to many others such as his swim across the width of the Maldives to raise awareness for climate change's affect on low lying areas in the world. Pugh has swum in the hot waters of the flooded volcano that is Deception Island, the Lake Malawi, and the English Channel amongst many other places.
Lewis Gordon Pugh is the first person in the world to have completed a long distance swim in each of the world's 5 oceans. His love for extreme swimming and protecting the environment have made him a force of global change to watch out for.
