Australian Ambassador Bill Farmer said the Rp6 billion project aimed to create alternative livelihoods for local fishermen so that they did not need to fish illegally in Australian waters. The assistance scheme which was part of a bilateral cooperation agreement between Australia and Indonesia would hopefully reduce the number of Indonesian fishermen apprehended by Australian police for poaching in Australian territorial waters.
Farmer and his entourage are visiting NTT to observe the joint operation to reduce poaching in the sea separating Indonesia and Australia.
