Lion's Mane Jellyfish Given to The Deep Aquarium in Hull: Video
A Lion's Mane Jellyfish, Thought to be the World's Biggest Captive Jellyfish Has Been Given to the The Deep Aquarium in Hull
It was captured by a fisherman off the East Yorkshire coast in England and will soon go on display at The Deep aquarium.
According to The Telegraph, the Lion's Mane Jellyfish has a 14 inch diameter bell and long pink tentacles.
Mr. Tom Rowe, an aquarist at The Deep said the aquarium is delighted to have the Lion's Mane at their facility.
It's the first time I've seen a Lion's Mane in the region and it is by far the largest jellyfish ever displayed at The Deep. As far we know its the largest jellyfish in captivity.
These species of jellyfish are usually found in the cold waters of the Arctic, North Pacific, and North Atlantic and are the largest known species of jellyfish in the world. They survive by eating other jellyfish. The largest ever recorded was in 1870 and washed up in Massachusetts Bay; it had a bell over 7 feet across and tentacles that measured longer than 120 feet.
This new addition to The Deep does have a small tear in its bell, but once it has received care from the veterinarians it will be able to go on display hopefully by this weekend.
