Large logs like these, left on a timber harvest site, can become
breeding grounds for bark beetles. About 100 feet from these logs,
three large, mature red pines had been killed, apparently from bark
beetle attack.

This is a relatively large logpile. Damaging levels of bark beetles can build up in piles smaller than this--leaving even a few large logs on site can be a problem.

It's important to remove (or burn) logs like this from a harvest site
as soon as possible after harvest. Failure to do so can seriously
threaten the health of the trees left on site.
