Canis lupus occidentalis

Dublin Zoo's pack of Grey wolves came from Port Lympne Wild Animal Park in England. Although they are called grey wolves there is a great deal of variation in the colour of the coat. Grey wolves can be black or white or any shade in between.

Even if a mother wolf is white she may give birth to dark pups.
Grey wolves come from many different countries including Canada, Northern America and Northern Europe.

Wolves once lived in Ireland but their forest habitat was almost completely cut down and people hunted them.

The last wolf was seen in Ireland in the early 1700s.
Wolves are very social and live in large family groups called packs. By living and hunting together they can kill animals that are much larger than they are. In the wild they would hunt moose, elk, bison and reindeer. If they are hunting alone they will prey on much smaller animals like rabbits and beavers.
