Lonesome George Dies at 100
Lonesome George, believed to be the last Pinta Galapagos tortoise in the world, has died. Lonesome George was estimated to be 100 years old.
Conservationists at Galapagos Islands National Park will carry out an autopsy to determine how George died: 100 is young for a giant tortoise.
As of June 24, 2012, the Pinta Island tortoise is extinct.
Tortoises were plentiful on the Galapagos islands until the late 19th century, but were later hunted for their meat by sailors and fishermen to the point of extinction.
Least appropriate use of the Lonesome George story goes to Roy Masters. Too soon, Roy. Too soon.
