Los Angeles County Supervisors Vote To Ban Plastic Bags: Starting in 2011, 10 Cent Per Plastic Bag Fee

Los Angeles County has become one of the largest jurisdictions in the United States to ban plastic bags.

The ordinance bans stores from giving customers single-use plastic bags and would require them to charge 10 cents for each paper bag beginning next year.

San Francisco already has its own plastic bag ban but the Los Angeles County Plastic Bag Ban is more far reaching.

The ban would be the most restrictive in California and nationwide, said Mark Gold, president of the environmental group Heal the Bay.

San Francisco's ban is less restrictive because it does not ban bioplastic bags made from corn starch, which do not biodegrade in the ocean, and Malibu's ban does not levy a surcharge on paper bags, Gold said.
