Los Angeles Earthquake: Pico Rivera Hit with 4.4 Quake

Los Angeles was hit by a 4.4 magnitude earthquake at 4:04am on March 16. The epicenter of the Los Angeles earthquake was in Pico Rivera, between East L.A. and Whittier. (USGS report on Pico Rivera Earthquake in Los Angeles)

The Pico Rivera quake struck along the Whittier fault line, and was described by Cal Tech seismologist Kate Hutton as a thrust earthquake, in which only one side of the fault line moves.

The latest Los Angeles earthquake was felt as far away as Watts, Sun City, West L.A., and Riverside. Aside from automated calls to 911 from buildings' security systems, police and emergency crews have received no calls for help. No injuries have been reported. The USGS reports the radius as ten miles.

Home to 10 million people, Los Angeles County had its last strong earthquake in Northridge in 1994, which killed some 60 people.
"Probably the best way to view it is that it's an earthquake drill. It reminds you to get your stuff together and your plan and make sure everything is kosher in case we have a bigger one one day," she said.
