Loud Boom Heard in Vancouver

At approximately 3:30am on November 1st, a crashing boom shook Vancouver, BC. The boom was heard in both Vancouver proper and as far as North Vancouver. Reports on CBC radio casually brushed it off as thunder however witnesses believe it could have been something more. The noise was a one time crack which rocked homes and woke people from sleep. Speculation as to the exact cause of the boom range from Halloween fireworks to something more sinister, like tectonic events leading up to an earthquake.

I think this is an important story and would benefit from other NowPublic contributors working on it. I've flagged it as News Wanted and invite others in relevant locations to look for more evidence.

I'm glad to hear others heard it too!  I have been listenting to the news and even called our local police, and they have nothing on it.  I heard it coming from the West, a low rumbling noise and then a boom and then the rumbling continued east.  My daughter heard it too and we thought it was either an earthquake, a low flying aircraft or a train crashing.  Our house and windows shook, but if this was from a clap of thunder, it is the strongest one I have ever felt.  I once witnessed a lightening bolt across the street of our home down south, but never a rumble as strong as this.  Please keep us advised, we are very interested to know exactly what it was.

Thank you.

I was near W 11th and Alma when it happened and it sounded like it was coming from the North.  My first thought was that it was an explosion.   It didn't rumble like thunder.

I was in North Van and heard the boom which felt in close proximity. Both of us in the room heard it and looked at each other - I also was watching the funiture to see if anthing would sway - but there was none. It was deep and rumbled. There was no mistaking it. The only thought would be thunder. This is the first thing I've seen or heard even mentioning it.

ryan nadel, you've convinced me you've done the work - it's authentic. I also think that you've been fair and thorough. I didn't get the sense that you were hiding your biases, or passing off other's work as your own. Or worse -- getting paid by those you cover -- so it's transparent and independent. I also think you deserve praise for being an eyewitness, and for your investigative efforts. Good stuff.

Booms are being heard across the globe and are serious enough that they should be considered as news worthy. These sounds are precursors for omminous things to come. Good stuff!

My god - You are hilarious. Good Stuff yourself. I've been snickering about your comment for the last two days. Everytime I wonder about that boom I heard, I think "Yeah, that was one ominous boom. Danger." I'm going to host a party and have you and ol' Nadel as the guests of honour. I hope you can make it here for that. I can see the party theme now - "Welcome to the future - NowPublic.com is now the most trusted source for information since Wikipedia."

I heard it - it woke everyone in our house.  I looked outside and concluded that it was thunder, but it sounded closer than any thunder i've ever heard and there wasn't any other thunder. But immediately afterward there was a really heavy burst of rain.

it is near the ocean. I wonder if it was a sound wave. That is completely fascinating. Like a sonic tsunami.

Has the news been covering this any more there?  I was starting to believe it was some oceanic soundwave but I just came accross this site.

http://home.att.net/~thehessians/mysterybooms.html Some kind of global disaster watch site.

The link looks funny but it is just some ones home att account. There is a list of probably 20-30 of these events that occoured within the past two years all over the world.  Maybe I will try to email them and let them know about this one and see if they will let me post their article here.

Now I am still not convinced that it was not some military test or something?

Puzzling.

WOW - It is great to be able to share news worhty information with those that are intersted! I heard it too, I was in North Van with Flannegan, we came through the front door, which faces north, at about 3:23am, I made my way over to the main window, facing south, to close the drapes. I thought a breath of fresh air would be good since we had been in a bar so I opened the patio door (south facing). Since it was late I was about to suggest we wind down, I turned to walk back to Flannegan, who was in the kitchen area of my small(ish) apartment near the top of Lonsdale, again facing north, when the said noise occured. We both looked at each immediately and wonder aloud, "what was that?". I turned back to the open patio door (south facing), because I was still close to it, about 4.5 feet away and stuck my left ear out. The noise was STILL there. It was loud, long, and seemed to be coming from a sonic interruption, as though the sound barrier had been broken. It did sound like it was from the ground not so much the sky but there was no vibration after. There was no light in the sky (or the ground) and it did not re-occur. Since this seems to be the "go to page" for "newsies" I hope this doesn't sound like to an odd question but can the sound barrier be broken under ground?

Thta's a great question. I am not sure but I am going to try to look into these sounds a bit more just for fun. It is strange how the media does not cover this very much. I wikll keep updating here if I find anything.
