March 22 - World Water Day

As you reach for that bottle of water today, or have a shower, or give your pet some fresh water with their dinner, take a minute to think about the fact that today is World Water Day.

It's a day that was first started in 1992 by the UN General Assembly to draw some much needed attention to the fact that not everyone around the world has access to clean and safe drinking water, and they should.

Despite the apparent abundance of clean water in the US and most of the developed world, more than 1 billion people around the world lack clean, safe drinking water and more than 2.6 billion lack adequate sanitation services.

There are many events taking place around the world to commemorate this event, or you can take part in the virtual water walk.

If there is not a Walk in your area, you can join the global "Virtual Walk For Water". We’ll include your name in a symbolic water jug to be carried by a participant in one of the local Walk for Water events.

If you have attended an event, and have some photos or video, we would love to see them!

I think this is an important story and would benefit from other NowPublic contributors working on it. I've flagged it as News Wanted and invite others in relevant locations to look for more evidence.

World Water Day is a fantastic cause and I'm more than happy to be a part of the Virtual Walk. Here's hoping that in coming years there are even more events nationwide.

Well this is just an artistic photo of a drinking fountain in my school. In tribute to World Water Day, I'd like to be thankful for water that comes out the fountain during my most famished days of thirst. I believe that in certain countries, people have to walk miles just to get a drink of water, while we enjoy it at a convenience. On that basis, I am thankful not to have taken water for granted.

I am a health clinician with a practice in White Rock. I have been testing this water with my clients for over an month now and I am amazed at the improved health benefits they have received from drinking this water. My mandate is to educate people about what they are putting in their mouths and their bodies. Everyone owes it to themselves and their families to get educated about water. It is such a simple thing. Do your due diligence. If you have symptoms or if you are tired all the time, if you have trougle sleeping or if you are stressed, find out about this water and get your free samples. You deserve better health.

It ain't the prettiest water, but, it's been doing it's job for at least the last 50 years, so, can't be all that bad.

This photo was taken in Maharashtra, India in November 2007 by myself, Johan Etsebeth, a photojournalist working for S.O.S. International, a US based non-profit who works at providing water wells to communities in India without adequate access to safe, clean drinking water. We will not be able to help these communities that suffer from unnecessary illness and hardship without the help of people who care. People can make a difference and have a positive impact in the lives of others. Our web site is www.sowerofseeds.org.

For almost two years I've been a regular watcher of a wildlife webcam with live video stream showing many different species of animals coming to drink fresh water at a small, natural watering hole called the Nkorho Pan in South Africa.
The webcam, the first of its kind, is operated by "AfriCam" from the Nkorho Bush Lodge on the grounds of a private game reserve, Sabi Sands, which shares an open border with the Kruger National Park in South Africa.
It was during the early morning hours of December 25, 2006 (still late in the evening of Christmas day in the United States), that I and many "cammers" worldwide witnessed the horrendous sounds of a big game animal falling prey to a group of very hungry lions. The drama took place in real time; although, as was usual, the camera was still in its stationary (night-vision) mode, pointing to this small body of water without any animals in sight.
Then, still in black-and-white, one lion came into view, rolling on the ground in pure delight. Soon thereafter, when the webcam operator started moving the camera, she zoomed in on this beautiful lioness who had taken a break to get a deserved drink of water... This picture here is one of many screen-captures I was able to take over a period of twenty-four hours. For we would soon discover what would be on the menu of these famished big cats, known as the "3+1 Pride" for the next couple of days: a fair-sized Cape buffalo!

This is a handle-less water pump in Soho, London that was the source of an outbreak of Cholera in the 1840s. Dr John Snow discovered that everyone who was ill, had drunk water from this pump and he removed the handle and the outbreak stopped. See his Wikipedia site for more information.

I took this in Salem, MA where the North River meets the overpass to North Street. There was a pipe letting the river go through the overpass. The swans were drinking from the flow of the pipe.

What an amazing article written by Amy Judd.  These types of articles allow environmentalists and those alike, to think outside the box of what we believe is clean and pure drinking water.  While most of our waters are found to be inhabited with single-celled organisms, such as amoeba (algea); there are also other contaminants and elements in our waters that can cause illness to our bodies and our pets--mostly derrived by the wrecklessness of our own selves.

Please take the time to read the article I have posted as being inspired by this article.

The lovely pair of ducks, featured in this story (Two Birds Near Water), were found grooming and enjoying a refreshing drink of water at Busch Gardens in Tampa, FL.

I shot this photo in Kathmandu, Nepal. The banner is in Nepali and it says, "There is no kerosene fuel, no cooking gas, no drinking water, no diesel, no petrol (gasoline), no electricity. Is there a government in this country? Is this democracy or chaos?"

Note: A day after I shot this picture, a similar picture appeared on the cover of a Nepali magazine.

During the two weeks I was in Kathmandu, I witnessed 8 hours of blackout (load shedding) every day in every house six days a week. I witnessed very long lines of cars, trucks and motorcycles at gas stations. I heard many areas of Kathmandu has limited supply of drinking water.
