Mardi Gras Indians, Carnival 2009

As Mardi Gras continues in New Orleans today, aside from the scantily clad dancing girls, the parties, the drunk people falling all over themselves in the street, there is also the unmistakable smell of trash in the air - mostly from beer, vomit, urine and discarded plastic beads. The trash cans are over flowing and the portable toilets are starting to smell.

The city is doing well with dealing with the mess and smell however, employing huge cleaning trucks that clean the streets and leave a lemony scent behind.

Potential symptoms of the recession felt by the city could have made the smell at Mardi Gras much worse, as Mayor Ray Nagin announced plans in late January to cut the city’s cleaning budget. But after two weeks of public outcry and some closed-door meetings with the city council, Nagin agreed to restore funding to the cleaning services.

“We’re going to make sure there is as much lemony scent as possible,” Nagin told New Orleans’ WDSU News.

It seemed as if some of the party goers wouldn't even have cared that much about how clean the streets were - they were there to have a good time and forget about their recession troubles; even for just a few hours.
The trash was more a reminder of how good the party was than anything else, and although the trash does continue to pile up throughout the Carnival, the city do their best to maintain the mess.
