Meteorites in Morocco Confirmed as Martians
Scientists are stimulated by the confirmation of last summer’s space invaders. Meteorite chunks that landed in Morocco last July have been verified as rocks from Mars.
A committee of meteorite experts confirmed that the 15 pounds of meteorite found in North Africa did indeed come from Mars.
Since samples of Mars have never been returned to Earth by spacecraft, the fallen fragments are vital for studying the potential for plant-life on the Red Planet.
The potential for information along with the newness of the sample makes this discovery exhilarating for scientists. The last fresh Martian meteorite fell to Earth in 1962, so experts are rushing to get a hold of the rocks.
Darryl Pitt, a meteorite dealer, said he charges from $11,000 to $22,500 an ounce for the Martian meteorite.
Who knew rocks could be so pricey?
