Michelle Obama spoke to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) on Thursday and she spoke very highly of the community gardening program.
Last week the USDA launched the program to develop gardens at all USDA facilities to help the public learn sustainable gardening techniques in these tough economic times.
On Thursday Michelle Obama brought a sapling of a Jackson magnolia from the magnolia tree in the White House grounds planted by President Jackson to his wife Rachel, and called the new gardening program a 'very good thing'.
"I was ... particularly pleased to hear that (Vilsack) is working on creating these wonderful gardens here at the USDA. ... and kicking off this effort to build these gardens all over the world in all of the facilities of the USDA, because I'm a big believer in community gardens, both because of their beauty and for their access to providing fresh fruits and vegetables to so many communities across this nation and the world."
The USDA think that the best way for Michelle to support their program would be to plant a White House garden herself, but that remains to be seen.

I wonder what the USDA was thinking about suggesting Mrs. Obama to plant a garden? The White House has the most beautiful garden.

I believe they were suggesting a community garden to grow fruits and vegetables, sort of like the victory gardens of WWII. It would be a great way to promote eating local fruits and vegetables to cut down on personal carbon footprints--what's more energy efficient than eating fresh foods out of your own backyard?? Which doesn't explain why Michelle Obama is buying magnolia saplings...

No it doesn't at all - I thought it must be symbolic of something but I'm not sure what.

I feel really sorry for her. She has to close down her obvious talents and become completely non-contraversial. While what she says about gardens is OK, any Shirley, Jennifer, Ruth couild have said that, as well as Tom. Dick, and Harry. I prefer the British model uynder Tony Blair where his partner carried on working for Matrix on very contraversial legal cases, sometimes attacking the government. Surely her partner can take that kind of thing.
