MidWest Floods Damage Essential Food Crops; National Guard Deployed to Iowa by PEP

In a world where food and clean water are becoming rare commodities, the floods across Iowa and the Midwest could have global repercussions.  Corn, soybean, and wheat crops have been destroyed.

Amtrak has stopped service across some routes. The University of Iowa has struggled to save its campus.

And what will remain: the clean-up. No one yet knows what toxic materials, as well as sewage, motor oils, chemicals, household solvents, and just plain trash have polluted the waters now surging downstream.

National Guard troops worked with local residents to stem the damage from the widespread flooding in Iowa that killed at least three people, forced tens of thousands to evacuate and severely damaged the state's corn crop.

The drenching has also severely damaged the corn crop in Iowa, America's No. 1 corn state, and other parts of the Midwest at a time when corn prices are soaring and food shortages have led to violence in some poor countries.
