Mississippi River Creeps closer to Elsberry, Missouri.
These are photos from Elsberry, Missouri. The river is about 6-8 miles from us...usually. You can see the water creeping closer to town. It is expected to crest on Tuesday night/Wednesday.
Last week, the Fire Department started sandbagging. After completing many pallets of sandbags, they suspended operations. When asked, the fire chief stated that since the levee was holding, they would not actually stack the sandbags. They only laid a few sandbags behind one of the businesses but that was the extent of it.
Many levees in this area have now broken and the water is rising at a quick pace. The fire department did lay a few more sandbags but did not make a wall. Is Elsberry taking too large of a gamble with the safety of the citizens and businesses of this small town? The river is not expected to breach the railroad tracks that border the town, but who can really predict what the river will do? If the river does go higher than expected, it will be much too late at that point to start laying the sandbags, as the area they have to protect is a long one.
