More snow is expected to fall on Britain in the next 24 hours, despite initial reports that the storm was moving away from the island. This will bring another wave of transport chaos and school closures, and some areas will get up to eight inches.

The most snow will fall on Gloucestershire, the Midlands and Wales as schools there have been closed since Monday.

It will also cause havoc for many traveling on roads and could shut down London's tranist system again. This prevented millions of people from getting in to work in central London.

Councillor Paul Bettison, chairman of the Local Government Association Environment Board, said he feared salt supplies were "drying up" due to rationing.

Paul Knightley, assistant forecast manager at MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said the snow could continue until the weekend.

He said: "An area of more persistent and heavier sleet and snow will push northwards. This will then bring moderate to heavy snowfall for the rest of the night for much of south and mid-Wales, the Bristol area, much of the Midlands, and into parts of central southern England."

Living so near the sea in Swansea, South Wales, we don't often see much snow. Yesterday was different though. We followed in the footsteps of Swansea poet Dylan Thomas, "through the snowy Grove" and into Cwmdonkin Park, which had been transformed into a monochrome playground by the unusual weather conditions.
The park was full of snowmen, snowballs, igloos, dogs and children, all making the most of the snow. More's forecast for tonight - wait and see!

At the start of the week winds from the East blew cold air coming from Russia over the full island . A band of rain from the south hit the UK and because of the cold air it turned to snow.

But in the coming hours and days more rain will hit the cold air, again turning to snow and there we go the UK will close down again ha ha.

My area has snow on the ground right now but it's the first time this winter we've had snow that has stayed there for more than a few hours.

Don't get me wrong, most of Scotland hasn't missed out, just Renfrewshire near Glasgow.

Just what England does not need.

Thanks for the continuing coverage.

I think you're probably overstating it. For one thing, only very few schools have been shut for all three days so far. For another, the forecast is for London NOT to be hit. No need to be more alarmist than necessary :)

It was a little scary this morning driving to work. Once I got on the main roads, it was OK but our little back streets were very icy.

Yes, I tried to get to work this morning but no go. I had to turn and come back. Oh well!

This is a view of London's Canary Wharf from my kitchen window. Now you know what I get to look at when I wash my dishes.
