Mount Etna Erupts in Sicily
Mount Etna erupted late at night on on January 12, spewing ash into the sky and forcing Fontanarossa Airport to close down overnight.
Mount Etna, located near Catania in Sicily, is Europe's most active volcano, and one of the most active in the world.
How Often Does Mount Etna Erupt?
Mount Etna has erupted at least once per year during the last decade, except for 2009. Etna has erupted at least every 20 years since 1928. Mount Etna is considered a Decade Volcano, which means that it presents hazards to nearby residents, is located near a populated area, and shows recent activity, as well as being accessible for study.
The two airports in Catania, at the base of the volcano, were reopened but civil aviation authority ENAC said it was still monitoring Etna's increased activity and ash emissions.
