The tremors happened after midnight and were followed by a tectonic earthquake. The temperature in Mount Kelud`s crater lake was recorded at 36.3 degrees Celsius at a depth of 15 meters, 35.0 degrees Celsius at a depth of 10 meters, and 33.5 degrees Celsius on the lake`s surface. The normal temperature is 32 to 34 degrees Celsius.

Areas within a radius of five kilometers from the crater`s lake have been declared off-limits to travelers.

The alert status of the 1,731 meter-high Mount Kelud was raised to the third level as of September 11, 2007, following the intensified activity of the volcano since August 27, 2007
