Cyclone 'Phyan' is likely to hit coastal Maharashtra and Gujarat, accompanied by winds of up to 85 km per hour and heavy rainfall. While the administration has also asked people not to panic, precautions need to be taken as the cyclone warning has been pegged at a high level six. Here is the timeline of some of the major cyclones to have hit South Asia
MUMBAI: The cyclone over the Arabian Sea on Wednesday was "likely to intensify further" and cross the Indian coast between north Maharashtra and south Gujarat in the early hours of Thursday, says the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Now named Phyan, the cyclone was about 250 km directly west of Goa at 2:30am Thursday, the IMD said on its website, even as it it issued an "orange" alert. That is one step below the red alert put out for a really severe cyclone. At that hour, Phyan was 420 km south-southwest of Mumbai and 670 km south-southwest of Surat in south Gujarat.

Fishermen have already been asked not to go out to sea, and oil rigs in Bombay High were battening down, according to local media reports. The IMD expects that maximum sustained surface wind speed under the influence of Cyclone Phyan will be 70-80 kmph around 11.30pm on Wednesday, gusting up to 90 kmph.

Mumbai: Even though the administration was prepared for the worst, Cyclone Phyan has spared Mumbai. It is now moving northwards towards Gujarat, but has weakened considerably. The system over Arabian Sea is likely to move north-northeastwards and cross south Gujarat and north Maharashtra coast near to Valsad, close to Mumbai by Wednesday evening.

Importantly, Mumbai has only been spared from a direct hit but threat still remains and heavy rains are expected later in the evening. The Phyan is right now positioned about 180 km south-southwest of Mumbai and 430 km south-southwest of Surat.

Gale winds speed reaching 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph are likely along and off Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts during next 24 hours. Sea condition will be high to very high over along and off Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts.

This cyclone, called PHYAN, is pegged at level six and the Met department has advised people in low lying areas to vacate at the earliest. All emergency services have been put on high alert.

Hope this will move towards sea, and not cause havoc in the state.

800 people missing in the cyclone.

About 80 fishing trawlers, with an average of 10 men in each, are missing in cyclone-hit Arabian Sea, organisations of fishermen along India's west coast said on Wednesday.

As Cyclone Phyan intensified and tore northwards, slated to make landfall along the north Maharashtra-south Gujarat coast late Wednesday night, there were reports of boats missing at sea, despite repeated warnings from the authorities over the last few days that no fisherman should venture out.

The Goa state govt. confirmed that 68 fishermen and 4 trawlers are still missing:

The State government today officially confirmed that around 68 fishermen were still missing after being trapped in cyclone Phyan which passed through  Goa’s coastline early this week.

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat addressing a press conference in the city said that 68 fishermen, four trawlers and one canoe were still missing.

“Out of the four trawlers there are confirmed reports of two fishing trawlers having sunk,” he said adding, “Sixty eight fishermen were on board four fishing trawlers and one canoe, which were caught in Phyan.”

He said when the warning was sent by the Centre on November 9, the trawler were returning from Ratnagiri and were trapped in the cyclone.

Kamat said the government has decided to give Rs.1 lakh as compensation to the families of the deceased or still missing.

“Rs 50,000 will be given to the family immediately as interim relief,” he said.

Further, Kamat said, he has asked the Fisheries Department to prepare a report on the loss of lives and the damages caused to the trawler owners, who have lost their nets and damaged their boats as a result of the cyclone.

“The State government was in constant touch with the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) who were expected to call off their search and rescue operation later today,” he stated.

Kamat said the exact number of people missing will be compiled by the Fisheries Department soon.

Present for the briefings were Fisheries Minister Joaquim Alemao, Public Works Development D Minister Churchill Alemao, Civil Supplies Minister Jose Philipe D’Souza and St Andre legislators Francis Silveira, all known to be associated in trawler business.

Meanwhile, Kamat said the government is also assessing the damage caused to 17 houses in Arambol.

“As an interim relief we have given the families Rs 3000 cases while Rs 12500 will be given through the Rajiv Awaas Yojana after the deputy Collector prepares an assessment report,” he said.

Of the 17 houses affected by the cyclone in Arambol, two were fully damaged while others partly, according to North Goa Collector R Mihir Vardhan. “By Monday, all will be paid compensation”, he said adding that panchanamas were being done by the mamlatdar.

The alert for Gujrat has been lowered. Mumbai also seems safer now...though alert is still on.

According to MET department sources, cyclone Phyan has touched land but has bypassed Mumbai and is said to be losing its intensity. Mumbai and its neigboring areas are still on alert until the cyclone weakens further. The cyclone is expected to pass about 100 km from the city between Alibaug and Mumbai.

The IMD has adviced the Konkan region to be on alert for the next 12 hours. High winds and heavy rains are still forecasted for the city. Fishermen are still adviced to refrain from venturing into the seas fro the next 12 hours.

The cyclone alert in Gujarat meanwhile has been lowered to a warning and will be removed once there is an evident weakening of the cyclone. According to the MET department, although the cyclone is said to be fizzling out the coastline will remain on alert until further weakening in the cyclonic weather conditions.

Mumbai's municipal corporation, issued an advisory for the closure of schools, colleges and city offices earlier today. The downpour meanwhile continues in Mumbai and the city is expected to witness heavy rains with a 'cyclone alert' sounded for South Gujarat and North Maharashtra coast.

The Indian Meteorological Department has said Mumbai and surrounding areas will face rough weather. The deep depression is likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm and make a landfall between Mahua in south Gujarat and Dahanu in north Maharashtra. Squally winds speed reaching 90 kmph, are likely to commence along and off south Gujarat and Kerala coasts besides Lakshadweep, while it will hit Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra coasts during the next 48 hours.
