With the carbon tax kicking in today across the province of British Columbia consumers are searching even harder for ways to avoid emptying their wallets into their gas tanks.  A new site called MyGallons.com has launched in attempts to help people save some money before they hit the pumps. Unfortunately, the services provided by the site are only offered in the United States so far. After feeling the burn this morning from filling my tank at $1.64/ L, I can only hope they will be expanding their market to Canada shortly.

MyGallons.Com is offering memberships online similar to Sam's Club and Costco - only you're not buying household food/items, you're buying gasoline with your 'My Gallons' card!

The MyGallons website says in its 'How It Works' section: Pre-purchase fuel at your current MyGallons price - Once you have logged in, you will be able to access your MyGallons account. You will see how many gallons of fuel you have available, transaction history, current price for purchasing more fuel, etc. You will also have the option of pre-purchasing fuel to add to your account at your current MyGallons price. The price of fuel frequently changes. The quote you see on your screen is good for making a pre-purchase at that point in time. When you pre-purchase fuel, you are locking-in the price on the gallons you are purchasing at that moment. Your "MyGallons price" refers to regular unleaded fuel and includes estimated taxes based on your location. You will add gallons to your account at any time except as described in 3 below.

So what's it gonna cost you? "Cost of annual membership is $29.95 when enrolling in the auto-refill program. Cost of annual membership is $39.95 for the manual refill program."

  • • Limit access of family members or employees to only fuel purchases
  • • Higher gas prices only increase the amount you save
  • • Easy, automated purchases of gasoline
  • • Maximize your savings with MyGallons

That's a clever idea. I can see "gas price watching" becoming an internet obsession. Facebook mygallons.com application, anyone?

Not so much that the price of gas has gone up, it always has.  The  problem here is the speed at which it has increased.  Usually the price climbs and falls back a little, with it falling a little higher than the pre rise price, so it gradually creeps up.

Now it's just going up, and up.  Plus it's having an effect on prices in stores.  Price of food, clothes, etc are climbing as well, while wages are either stagent or climbing a lot slower.

This photo was taken in McCloud, California with Mt. Shasta in view behind the station.

At least the high gas prices come with a great view.

It's really hard to save money on mygallons.com, they charge $39.95 per year for membership ($29.95 if you let them auto-fill the account which defeats the advantage of timing the market), they bill by the average price in your area, they charge $1.95 per reload which basically means you need to buy in large volume hence you can't dollar cost average, and they charge a 30 cents a gallon adjustment for premium unleaded.

To top this off, the BBB gave them a "F" rating for false advertising.   This was changed to a "NR" rating when they agreed to stop taking new memberships and refund existing memberships until they actually had an agreement with the banks issuing the pre-pay cards.
