Villagers in southern Peru were struck by a mysterious illness after a meteorite made a fiery crash to Earth in their area, regional authorities said Monday.

Around midday Saturday, villagers were startled by an explosion and a fireball that many were convinced was an airplane crashing near their remote village, located in the high Andes department of Puno in the Desaguadero region, near the border with Bolivia.

Residents complained of headaches and vomiting brought on by a "strange odor," local health department official Jorge Lopez was quoted by AFP as telling Peruvian radio RPP.

I've flagged this as "Needs More Information" because it seems to be a bit of a mystery, given the "strange odor." Could the explosion actually have been a drug, or other, plane crashing and the meteorite story not quite yet proven?

Good story.  Seems like the meteor was quite large and did not burn up all teh way in teh atmosphere.  Since meteors contain foreign metals and minetals, its quite possible the rock is interacting chemically with oxygen.  My guess here would be sulphuric gas.

Hi, I think this story is amazing, I have always heard of "Wormwood" from the Bible . In the book of Revelation .....

Rev. 8:10-11

Then the third angel blew his trumpet, and a great flaming star fell out of the sky, burning like a torch. It fell upon one-third of the rivers and on the springs of water.   The name of the star was Bitterness.  It made one-third of the water bitter, and many people died because the water was so bitter.

   Wormwood is a possibility.
