Nancy Black Indicted for Feeding Killer Whales in Monterey Bay
Monterey Bay Whale Watch Owner Nancy Black Charged with Illegally Feeding Orcas
Nancy Black, a well-respected marine biologist who runs Monterey Bay Whale Watch, has been indicted for allegedly feeding killer whales in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary in 2004 and 2005.
Nancy Black was also charged with altering video footage to cover up the 2005 incident. It's a federal offense to feed (or otherwise interfere with) marine mammals under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
Nancy Black's attorney says that the marine biologist broke no laws, and was only observing the orcas as they ate free-floating chunks of blubber.
Black’s tours and research aboard her company’s whale-watching vessels -- the 70-foot Sea Wolf II and the 55-foot Pt. Sur Clipper -- have been featured extensively in local media and appeared on the "Today" show and the "CBS Evening News."
