Shark Chases Kayaker off Nauset Beach

A shark spotted in the water off Nauset Beach in Orleans, Massachussetts prompted the evacuation of over 3,000 beachgoers on July 7, 2012. Nobody was attacked, but Shark Week definitely came early for one kayaker.

The shark, estimated to be a 14-foot Great White, was following kayaker Walter Szulc, who recounted the incident with a refreshing lack of false bravado: "I just reacted. I thought it was either it or I’m getting in so I just paddled like no tomorrow. I kind of ran out of the water like a little child."

Nauset Beach has since been reopened, but swimmers are warned to stay away from seals. You could become collateral damage should a shark get hungry. The Nauset Beach shark wasn't even the biggest spotted off Cape Cod over the Fourth of July weekend. Try a 16-footer.
