Although measurement methods have improved enormously over the last few decades, it has remained very difficult to measure changes in the crust that could enable earthquake prediction. Now, the field has been boosted by the announcement that, using remarkably sensitive new instruments, seismologists have detected minute changes in rock that preceded small earthquakes along California's San Andreas Fault by as much as 10 hours.
