Eruption Forms New Island in the Red Sea

On December 19, 2011, a volcanic eruption in the Red Sea sent lava spewing 90 feet in the air, forming a new island. The island is small, less than a third of a mile across. Indeed, it took a while for satellite imagery to verify its existence.

The new island in the Red Sea is just north of Jebel Zubair (the Zubair Group); see map below.

The island has not yet been claimed by Lex Luthor, Syndrome, or C.O.B.R.A. This is just as well: newly-formed volcanic islands tend to break apart shortly after their formation, which makes them unsuitable for supervillain HQs. However, volcanologist Rick Wunderman says that the Red Sea is a wild card:

"That's usually the (material) that you see in the Red Sea not so rich in gasses, more able to withstand waves and storms," he said.
