The food stamp distribution centers in Marrero, New Orleans and St. Tammany Parish were overwhelmed by applicants this morning and have stopped allowing new people to join the lines.

The applicants turned away today were told to come back on Wednesday.

According to the state Department of Social Services, the food stamps site at Johnny Jacobs playground in Marrero is out of applications and can no longer process applications.

A site set up at the Castine Center near Mandeville also cut off the line after being overwhelmed by would-be applicants.

The scene was the same in eastern New Orleans, St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church.

Residents can call 1-888-LAHELPU for food stamp inquiries.

DrMarty, I like this story. It's good stuff. 5 days to get bottled water after Katrina and now we can't even feed people. Looks like we really learned a lot since Katrina, doesn't it?

Everyone's patting themselves on the back down here.  My idea is that some entrepreneuring lad or lass approach a venture capitalist to fund a pseudo-New Orleans somewhere along the Amtrak line in Mississippi, to house 50,000 people.  There would be timeshares from December 1 through May 31 each year, with reduced rates during the hurricane season...because an evacuation of New Orleans would fill the pseudo city up, and guests would have to go to make room for them.  FEMA would just write one check to the pseudo city for the entire event.  Probably makes too much sense. Something like I posted the other day...maybe let the Chinese do it...they are building that city in Angola in Africa.
