NP Rank:
New York City given tornado warning
UPDATE: 6:15PM EST - Saturday August 16
There was no tornado in New York yesterday, but there was some strong winds.
There were plenty of damaging winds but no twisters in a storm that spawned a rare tornado warning in New York City, government meteorologists said Saturday.
National Weather Service crews assessed damage around the metropolitan area Saturday, a day after a severe thunderstorm toppled trees, stalled commuter trains and swamped parkways during the evening rush hour. The Weather Service had warned that the storm could spawn a tornado and told city and suburban residents to take cover.
Such warnings are fairly uncommon in the nation's largest city, although a tornado skipped through parts of Brooklyn last year and damaged dozens of buildings.
PREVIOUSLY:
New Yorkers today were given a tornado warning and urged to take shelter.
The warning was issued for the Bronx, which currently has dark skies and swirling clouds.
"The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning in the Bronx until 5:45 p.m.," the city said in a disaster alert service.
"People in these areas should take shelter. Stay in the lowest floor of your building, away from windows," the warning said.
New York City periodically gets hit by tornadoes but they are rarely as deadly as in the Midwest and South of the United States.

amyjudd, I like this story. It's good stuff. I am interested in learning the outcome of that warning. Was it widely followed? I know around Iowa, some weeks, we may have 3 or more warnings. One reason I believe tornadoes in the Midwest are so deadly, is most people are so used to them and rarely give a second thought to taking shelter. Unless the weather is especially violent, they are mostly treated like just another thunderstorm. Sadly, lives are lost every year and entire farms and towns destroyed.

Yea, I just moved to the city (Queens) and the sky grew incredibly dark so early. Hailing and swirling winds. I am just making pretend my little apartment is a log cabin right now.

A tornado warning in NYC would be eerie. Though, I live in Iowa and we get tornado warnings like we get April showers.

Interesting! Didn't realize New York gets tornadoes...? Seems like a rare occurrence (at least, haven't heard about many before?)...

i just flew into new york city from vancouver. because of thunder storms we spent over an hour in a holding pattern just outside the state. the pilot announced that air traffic control couldn't even give us an eta, that our hold time was "indefinite" and our minimum wait time was at least an hour and a half, adding that we would continue to circle until fuel became an issue, at which point we were going to have to divert for boston, where we could refuel and then head back to nyc.
things weren't looking good, but about 5 minutes after the pilot came back on and announced that if we didn't get cleared in the next 15 min we were definitely heading for boston, we were finally cleared to enter ny air space.
once we landed though things were really quiet on the ground - it had clearly rained hard earlier, but it's no longer raining at least in queens and manhattan and folks are out on the streets having a great time like it was any other friday night...

Good Stuff, an interesting 'weather story'. I remember being in JFK airport and being stuck on the runway for 3 hours because of bad weather. Apparently it was so bad it got rid of the radar or something. I feel sorry for anyone stuck on planes.

A tornado in Manhattan is highly unlikely -- too many tall buildings would just interfere with it and not allow room for it to fully form. It did get weirdly dark -- orange and green highlights in the gathering dark angry looking clouds. There was lightning and thunder, but in the end, it was just a typical summer storm here in NYC. There were delays at the airports ranging from a 1/2 hour to 2 hours.
There were warnings for people who were at malls in the outer boroughs where there tends to be more open space opportunities like parking lots and such. People were told to stay put. Whether it was heeded or not...is anybody's guess. So far, as of 8:30 am Saturday, there are no reports of any deaths or major damage related to the storm. Haven't seen any pictures of any tornados touching down either.

This photo is NOT of a Tornado, it is really a photo of a cell tower on a day with some rather dramatic clouds that I processed to look like this. I just titled it "G-Spot Tornado" because it seemed to fit the results and I like the song by Frank Zappa. If you still want to use it - go ahead, but my work is copyrighted and I must be credited. Thanks for noticing my photo.

This picture was taken on a yacht trip around Manhattan. Storms moved in and out quickly with strong rain and lightning. Luckily the storms were mostly over the city so we were safe and mostly dry on the boat.

Just outside of Amarillo, TX hours before tornados hit. We thought the sky was ominous; we non-southerners had no concept for what was brewing.
