NZ Earthquake: 7.6-Magnitude Quake Hits Raoul Island

Raoul Island, the largest of New Zealand's Kermadec Islands was hit with an earthquake measuring 7.6 in magnitude, according to the USGS. The NZ quake struck at 5:57am local time on October 22, 2011. Alternate reports rate the earthquake as measuring 7.3 or 7.4.

There was a provisional Tsunami Warning in place for New Zealand, which has since been downgraded. There is now no tsunami warning for New Zealand following the Raoul Island earthquake.

New Zealand is currently hosting the 2011 Rugby World Cup, and plays for the championship on October 23 against France. Australia beat Wales to secure a third-place finish.
