Residents of Wellington and Auckland, New Zealand are stuck in a snowstorm. While New Zealand isn't as warm as its antipodean neighbor, snow in Wellington and Auckland is very rare. In fact, neither city has seen snow in 30 years.

The snowstorm, driven by frigid Antarctic winds, is wreaking havoc in New Zealand's infrastructure as it blankets the country, but is also creating a winter wonderland that hasn't occurred in many residents' lifetimes.

If you live in New Zealand, brace yourself for:

  • School closures (snow day!)
  • Airport closures and delays
  • Power outages
  • Public transit slowdowns
  • Black ice on the roads as snowmelt refreezes overnight

Also, be careful when driving. Oh, and take some photos and videos of you, your friends and family frolicking in the snow. Snowfall is expected to continue through August 17, but should ease up closer to sea level.
