It was early Saturday evening, when what is being called a 'large' and 'extremely dangerous' tornado hit North Carolina, prompting emergency warnings.

We're expecting large violent tornadoes that are going to stay on the ground for a long period of time," said CNN meteorologist Jacqui Jeras. "This is a high-risk day," she added. "We only get a handful of days like this every year."

Richmond, Virginia; Washington, D.C., and Baltimore also were under tornado watches and warnings due to the weather system.

NBC17 has information on specific areas of North Carolina, and where emergency shelters are located.
