North Sydney Shark Attack

This story could have ended very badly, but it didn't: Andrew Lindop and his father were surfing in North Sydney, Australia, when a shark bit Andrew's leg. His dad helped get him to shore, where two other surfers jumped in with some first aid.

It helped that Andrew's dad was a senior lifesaving patrol captain.

The pair, who live on the headland, were first in the water and had only taken a couple of waves when the shark struck the 15-year-old. Andrew saw nothing but felt teeth chew into his left thigh and slip to his calf. There was no blood in the water; his full-length steamer wetsuit kept the deep wounds closed.

The kid was pretty cool considering," Harrison Vann, 17, a year 12 student at Barrenjoey High School, said. "He kept saying 'I just hope I don't lose my f---ing leg'."

This is Sydney's third shark attack in 18 days, and Avalon Beach, where the attack occurred, is currently closed.
