The Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico is Still a Huge Risk and Owner BP Has Decided to Burn Off Portions on Wednesday

BP who owns the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig that exploded and sank last week, has decided to burn off portions of the oil slick on Wednesday in an effort to try and stop it reaching the sensitive ecological areas in the Mississippi River Delta.

The burning operation will begin around 11am local time according to CNN, and although many details are still being worked out, the coast guard and officials are hoping that it works out. They have to still find the oil in the oil slick that will burn and will have to contain the oil in a safe and correct manner.

This oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico could become the worst in U.S history as about 42,000 gallons are leading a day. Eleven workers are still missing after the explosion, and of the 115 rescued, one is still in hospital.

It is still not known what caused the blast.

This burning off of the oil is a secondary option after BP has already tried to shut off the well using remote-controlled submarines, but it has not worked.

"If we don't secure the well, this could be one of the most serious oil spills in U.S. history," Coast Guard Rear Adm. Mary Landry, head of a joint response task force, said at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

The entire oil spill will not be set on fire on Wednesday; only a portion of the oil will be and this is a method that has been used in the past when the oil is approaching sensitive areas.

It is not known at this time how much the oil is affecting marine life; some whales have been sighted in the area but it is hoped that the oil is not interfering with wildlife at this time and will hopefully be under control before it does.

this is insane this oil spill is going to make the Exxon Valdez look like nothing soon, and all the ocean life that is going be affected its soo sad, there must be something they can do in short time just to hold it a bit until they get something that will last , well maybe this will open eyes to show how delicate nature is to human technology we need to be more careful and not destroy what needs us

i thank the spill will stop when, god pay BP back for jacking up the gas prices last summer, all the money we paid for high gas, he is going to make them spend it in the oil clean up.

I'm supposed to go to orange beach AL in a week for vacation. Should be great times once this oil hits shore.

"some whales have been sighted in the area but it is hoped that the oil is not interfering with wildlife at this time and will hopefully be under control before it does"This seems like a joke to me. How can they POSSIBLY expect to have it "under control" before if affects the wildlife? It already HAS. If not direct repercussions now, it will probably have huge lasting effects far, far into the future. Things like this are never cleared up completely. This was an accident that will be extremely harmful for biodiversity, not just in the immediate area, but also wherever the remnants of the oil are taken to.  The whole thing is extremely sad.

WHAT?!?  How is setting fire any better than doing nothing?  Taking action in panic and without increased research only results in more destruction.  There is a microorganism that thrives on oil... I don't see why efforts are not being made to utilize this method.  The organisms multiply at a rapid rate once dropped into the oil; they eat it!  Once it's cleaned up, they live out the rest of their short lives--no negative implications, no harm done, everybody wins.  The lack of effort in instilling this already-known information makes it hard to believe that the economic results due to the spill are creating a reluctance in going about the cleanup in a better way... :(

This is what happens when you let a globally traded company like BP Oil assure everyone they have "everyone's best interest and protective measures in place." "Drill Baby Drill!" Has suddenly become "Spill Baby Spill!" They have no clue of the cost of the clean-up, how to clean it up, or the danger to wildlife and humans. The economic damage to Tourism allown will be in the $Millions. BP says they'll spend a Billion; and will they be refunding the Coast Gaurd, a.k.a. Taxpayer's, for their efforts in the clean-up? I doubt it! They sell this "U.S. OIL" to the highest bidder, it doesn't get used by us Taxpayer's to whom it belongs. Sarah Palin sorta looks Stupid dontcha think? You Betcha! "Drill Baby Drill" and "save?" us another few month's of U.S. Oil supply. Lunacy at it's finest. "Black Gold" Huh? "Texas Tea" will be on the beach for everyone to clean-up. Their Has got to be a better way to get energy! Find it, map it and save it. When the World's Oil supply is gone we'll be needing that for National Security, not for profit.

Exxon valdez still has not paid out, they have spent more money fighting admittung liability than it would have cost to clean up the mess properly and paid the people whose livlyhood they ruined. Hopefully BP will be a better partner in cleaning up this mess. We have to get off this insane greed we have for oil,we have to invest in clean energy, oil will be a part of the eqasion but we have to start doing something now. My god if this was a woman having an abortion the right wing would be up in arms. So right wing religous people what are we doing to the earth, you know gods creation for us to live here not to ruin for greed.

If you like your car, food on the table,  etc. then you can thank BP for providing fuel to make it all happen. I mean, nobody ever delivered a pizza to my door that was driving a rickshaw. Our world lives on oil, so if you have an alternative fuel source, please share it with all the rest of the world. This isnt the first spill, and probably not the last. Wildlife will survive. The people and companies that provide energy are not greedy demons, but they are hardworking ,dedicated people.

You are absolutely ignorant! Plain and simple. Just like plenty of other posts I'm reading, you are the reason we are where we are - destroying this planet! Try using your brain, could help you out a bit. Thanks

I sure hope you dont own a car or cook or heat with fuel of any source. I certainly hope you own a hoe and have somewhere to grow your vegetables.

quick fix:; lower a hopper barge [inverted] over each on of the leaks. weld a 12 inch flange to the bottom of the barge. hook it up to a mile [or more] of flexible deepwater hose to plumb it up to the top. put it in a 4 point anchor barge, then pump it the the tankers nearby. that is coonass engineering, courtesy of a Texan. that could be done in three days. the materials are available now, and it would be a lot faster than waiting for a relief well to be drilled.

so how come they are not doing that..sounds like common sense..but i have no engineering experience...maybe you should be talking to someone who's handling the operation..

Leave it to some pinhead to find a way to blame Sarah Palin and right wing Americans for the spilling of oil by an international company. And then Lauren, the genius, comparing it to abortion??? And damn BP, those bastards!! How dare they be in business to make a profit!! The thought of a company being profitable....whose ever heard of such a thing?? Hey Lauren, when you get finished paying all of your bills, do you give all of the money you have left over back to your employer, or are you greedy and put it in the bank and keep it for yourself?? Yes, I agree, that it is tragic but until everyone is ready to start living in grass huts with no electricity, A/C, transportation(other than foot), roads, and pretty much ANYTHING else you have, get used to the fact that we need oil!! And we have to get it from the earth by drilling for it, and occasionally, there are going to be issues. I keep reading about the poor whales, and aquatic organisms, what about the fathers that were providing for their families, and aren't ever coming home again. How about those lives? Or are they insignificant because they were out there destroying the eco system? Screw you Lauren!! You, and people like you,(DON R) love to sit back and blame. If you have a problem with using oil prove me wrong, walk to work. Better yet, go get in your PRIUS, because they are so eco friendly, go look at the pollution caused by smelting cadmium to make your batteries. PINHEADS!!!

Pin Heads??You must watch to much Bill O Reilly....He's another horses ass they need to get rid of.They could take him down to the gulf and his mouth alone would contain the oil spill with room to spare.I've noticed O Reilly knows what guests on his show he can get away with lipping off to and those who he dosen't dare try.

0
Rus

Your use of the word "pinhead" gives you away, sir. That's Bill O'Reilly's favorite word, and it identifies you as being among the decreasing number of people who look to Fox as their only source of information and then turn around and uncritically repeat the Fox talking points. Sad.

0
J Hasty

Hey Rus, I used the the word "Pinhead" instead of "dumb ass liberal that that wants to suck the life out of this country because they think everyone owes them something", because I'm a nice guy. But to get back to your comment; If Fox News was my only source of information, why am I on this website looking at several different points of view? Ever think of that before you felt the need to comment? The only reason I made a comment at all, is because I could not understand the tie between an oil spill and someone being pro life. So that being said, screw you too! You dumb ass liberal that wants to suck the life out of this country because you think everyone owes you something!!

Sarah Palin was a stupid cunt whore. She of course is not to blame but her way of thinking is. Yea, it sad that these men died, but they died chasing the all mighty dollar as do other people. the damage that this company has done will affect our world for a long time. i understand accidents happen. but be BP should lose every penny the own. not  just the company but the ceo's and every one that has a hand in the cookie jar. this is a company like any other, and when you fuck up, you get your pants sued off. they need to fix the problem or lose everything.

BP must have been thinking with there dipstick Jimmy.....

and yet we all watch on while our planet is destroyed. Not the first, not the last and dont worry as the clean up costs and fines that BP etc. do incur will most probably be paid for in under a week from the daily profits they make. So rub your eyes in disbelief and do your usual and say nothing, but remember the more people that are willing to make sacafices now and stand up and say "stop this crazyness" the more chance we have of saving this planet, but are you willing to stop driving your car?.............................greed becomes us all, so every single one of us has blood and oil on our hands its just that they make all the money from it. If I owned BP I probably would'nt give a f**k either, after all the spill most certainly wont be heading anywhere near his shore.

T Rex

Well we do need the oil and I use plenty of it myself. But with that being said....Sara Palin is still an ass and know were near smart enough to be president.I almost wish if she ran she would get elected so we could hear her excuses why after all of her lip about how things need to be done the country is still no better off.All these people have the answers until they get elected and they find out just how much power they really have.I have know problem with a woman being president but sure as hell don't want it to be her.

1
T.Rex

It wouldn't do any good to share an alternative fuel source if you invented one. We'll be dependent on oil until there is none left.Oil companies have enough money to stifle any real advancement of an alternative fuel source. The best thing to happen would be to completly run out of oil (and this will happen one day)and be forced into seeking a different energy source. The human race will survive with out oil.

To all the idiots still alive associated with extracting the "payload" via Deepwater Horizon...THIS IS YOUR WAKE-UP CALL!!

Where does all the garbage from this clean-up operation go when it's all over? Surely there will be a lot of oil-tainted sand and debris. I say, since Sarah Palin has set herself up as the "Drill, Baby, Drill" Queen and seems thus-far unrepentant, all that crud should be loaded up and taken to her house: looks a lot different when it's all over your own front yard, eh Sarah?

BP has a hand in Valdez and now in the Gulf, by skimping on safety and promising equipment that is not there or doesn't work.  Read "the best democracy money can buy" on investigative reporting on BP's role in Valdez (p 178 and thereabouts except below or see below link) and spread the word so others know and put pressure on these irresponsible corps: "When it comes to oil spills, the name of the game is "containment" because, radar or not, some tanker somewhere is going to hit the rocks. Stopping an oil spill catastrophe is a nobrainer.Tanker radar aside, if a ship does smack a reef, all that's needed is to surround theship with a big rubber curtain ("boom") and suck up the corralled oil. In signed letters tothe state government and Coast Guard, BP, ExxonMobil and partners promised that nooil would move unless the equipment was set on the tanker route and the oil-sucker ship("containment barge") was close by, in the water and ready to go.The oil majors fulfilled their promise the cheapest way: They lied. When the ExxonValdez struck Bligh Reef, the spill equipment, which could have prevented thecatastrophe, wasn't there-see the Arizona meeting notes above. The promised escort shipswere not assigned to ride with the tankers until after the spill. And the night the ExxonValdez grounded, the emergency spill-response barge was sitting in a dry dock in Valdezlocked in ice. When the pipeline opened in 1974, the law required Alyeska to maintain round-the-clockoil-spill-response teams. As part of the come-on to get hold of the Chugach's Valdezproperty, Alyeska hired the natives for this emergency work. The natives practicedleaping out of helicopters into icy water, learning to surround leaking boats with rubberbarriers. But the natives soon found they were assigned to cover up spills, not clean themup. Their foreman, David Decker, told me he was expected to report one oil spill as twogallons when two thousand gallons had spilled." www.ethosworld.com/library/Greg-Palast-The-Best-Democracy-Money-Can-Buy-(2003).pdf

They act is if it's just a little spill but indeed it is not it could kill millions of creatures under water it is hurting our world if people just thought a little about our earth we would probably have a much better ecosystem. This oil spill is spreading fastly and we need to get it cleaned up be for it spreads everywhere.
