Florida And Alabama Gulf Oil Spill Impact: Inland Waterways Hit; Pensacola and Perdido Passes

The Gulf Oil Spill has now reached the inland waterways of Florida and Alabama as brown gooey oil and sludge has been spotted in the Pensacola and Perdido Passes, just more troubling news for the people of the Gulf states.

In Washington, Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the federal official coordinating the oil spill relief effort, told reporters that marine protection measures had adopted an open-close strategy to try to stem the flow through Perdido Pass into an intracoastal waterway straddling the Florida-Alabama border.

As the water ebbs, he said, vessels would be allowed to leave through Perdido Pass into the Gulf. As it flows, vessel traffic would be prohibited. The Coast Guard first employed that system Wednesday night.

"There's no 100 percent guarantee that the oil won't get through,'' Allen counseled, reporting, "there are very strong currents at the ebb and the flow.''

The thousands of feet of oil boom have been in place for weeks in those waterways but now it seems they were not effective enough to stem the tide of leaky oil.

Meanwhile, BP announced a $75 million fund for the states of Alabama, Mississippi and Florida.

BP COO Doug Suttles said in a statement Thursday that the energy giant was making the funds available at the request of the governors in each of the three Gulf states.

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour says the grant will fund additional protection for the most environmentally sensitive stretches of his state's coastline. It will also prevent Mississippi from using its own money to fight the oil spill.
