Update:

One person was killed and at least 16 were injured in the storms yesterday.

One person was killed and at least 16 were injured when fierce thunderstorms swept Georgia and Alabama with tornadoes, hail and lightning, downing trees and power lines, authorities said Thursday.

The tornado warning in Alabama has been down-graded to a severe thunderstorm warning:

Numerous tornado warnings are still in effect for Alabama, especially around the city of Montgomery.

There have been no tornadoes touching down as of yet in this area.

Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson in Alabama tells BNO News there have been no confirmed reports of tornadoes after the National Weather Service issued a rare tornado emergency for the county. A tornado emergency was also issued for Cleburne County.

Large and violent tornado expected to hit Edwardsville, Alabama - everyone is urged to take cover now.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado emergency for Central Calhoun and Central Cleburne in Alabama.

A tornado has touched down in Alabama, near the town of Eastaboga and a tornado warning is in effect now for the next couple of hours. About 1 to 2 inches of rain is expected to fall as well.

According to Houston County EMA Director Clark Matthews, the biggest concern for residents should be the formation of super cells.

“Super cells could lead to isolated tornadoes and damaging winds, so that’s our biggest concern,“ he said.
